I found one issue in the book shelves of our holiday home and it became my current read. It is quite an amazing series and it deserves a post I think.
... Diabolik was born in 1962, of an idea by Angela Giussani, who wanted to create something in an handy pocket size for the commuters she observed every day in Milan.
The carachter is a ruthless thief and he always wins. In the third episode he will meet the beautiful Eva kant, who would become his lifelong companion and his accomplice in a sequence of really clever and sophisticated robberies. No moral qualms as often the victims are whealthy families, bankers or rich criminals.
Their adventures are futuristic and at the limit of the unreal, and of high emotional impact, something I loved.
Needless to say I was kind of in love with Diabolik wonderful eyes. Eva Kant on the other hand was a style icon of mine. Her appereance slowly changed Diabolik from a cruel murderess thief into a more human character, distinguished by a certain sense of moral.
Eva Kant, something very unusual for a comic born in the sixties, becomes less and less submissive to the partner, her help was indispensable and appreciated by the protagonist.
Diabolik and Eva are in constant fight with inspector Ginko, who I also kind of liked. They are actually a inseparable trio of characters, none of them whould esist and be equally fascinating without the other.
... Angela and her sister Luciana, worked at Diabolik character all life, writing and supervising plots, collaborating with the many illustrators [Sergio Zaniboni, Enzo Facciolo, Lino Jeva just to name a few of the many italian cartoonists who worked at Diabolik strip] and managing the publishing house they had founded originally.
I loved Diabolik drawings and illustrative style, for instance the use of the screen - the dotted adhesive film that can be seen used in many illustrations and the constant change of perspective from one vignette to the next. I also loved that nearly all stories ended with a kiss.
... Well, I'll continue to enjoy my read and I wish you all a nice summer.
